These are fortified settlements, usually on a hill, in order to control the passages but also to protect the inhabitants in case of attacks. Determinants for their configuration were the morphology of the soil and the limited space. Inside a castle we find houses for the guard, water tanks, warehouses, but also entire settlements.\n\nThe type of Western castles was transported to Greece and the East by the Crusaders. In Northwestern Europe \"castle\" meant the private fortified residence of the feudal lord, while in other areas the simple fortress. In the late Middle Ages, castles began to take on a more compact form with well-built walls, moats and towers, whether private or not. The Frankish barons built castles to protect their sovereignty. The feudal castles consisted of three main parts: the wall, the main tower and the residence of the feudal lord, while during the Byzantine period they had a defensive use.\nAfter the 12th century the castles developed rapidly and the type of castle was formed which included the hill and the inner courtyard. Three types of castles were developed on this structure: a. with a large citadel, b. without a citadel, were protected by towers along the walls and c. with a small citadel, surrounded by concentric walls.\nAfter the Third Crusade (1189-1192) the castles were built on steep points and the lord's apartments were built in the inner courtyard, with the result that the citadel was not used as a residence. When the castle was \"flat\" they dug around the bastions, ditches which were filled with water.\nIn the Middle Ages the castle was the core of life, with the citadel being its heart, to which the whole guard retreated when the enemy captured the outer fortifications. It was the strongest and fortified part for another reason, it housed the residence of the lord. It stored food and weapons and was the last line of defense. There was always a well in the center for drinking water and supplies for possible long sieges. Although its walls were thicker, they were connected to the walls of the enclosure through a corridor, which was extended to the outer defensive perimeter, for escape in case of emergency. As the siege engines (catapults, rams, launchers) developed, the towers were built along the perimeter. One of the aims of this change was the need to create an empty space in which troops would gather for a possible counterattack.\nFrom the 15th and 16th centuries firearms spread rapidly, a development that marked a change in the art of war and the decline of castles as fortresses. Both the construction and the maintenance of a castle left the hands of the local rulers and passed into the hands of the king. In the mid-1300s, the development of new weapons of war (eg bombers) diversified defense needs. The principle that prevailed in the construction of the new forts foresaw a single solid structure. So now we have lower castles, without tall towers, which protruding were an easy target for the cannons. Now the castles were surrounded by irregular walls with many corners. The artillery was fired at the bastions, at prominent points of the wall, and protected the fortress. The asteroid shape gradually became popular. From the 16th century onwards, new means of warfare put an end to the castle's role as a fortress. It was the strongest part, so it was the control center and residence of the owner of the castle, while it also served as an observatory. It had its own fortification, independent, protected by other internal fortifications, making access to it difficult. In medieval castles the citadel was the center of the defense organization and was the last refuge of the defenders when the besiegers invaded. The citadels had floors, most of the time without an internal connection between them.
